How to Build a Backyard Crawling Course on a Budget
You don't need a trail to get better at crawling. Here's how to build a practice course in your yard or garage with rocks you already have.
When I got back into RC crawling, the honest problem was not the truck. It was that I had nowhere to drive it. The nearest real trail was a 40-minute drive, and I was not making that trip on a Tuesday evening for 20 minutes of driving.
So the truck sat. Then I put four rocks in the side yard, and I started driving almost every day.
A home course is the cheapest thing you can do for your driving, and it costs less than one set of tires. Here is how to build one that actually teaches you something.
Why a Home Course Beats Driving Circles in the Driveway
Driving flat pavement is fun for about a week. It does not teach you anything, because nothing on flat ground puts the truck in a position where technique matters.
What builds skill is repetition on the same hard obstacle. On a real trail you hit each obstacle once, clear it or don’t, and move on. On a home course you can run the same rock pile 15 times in one evening, try a different line each time, and actually feel the difference. That is how line selection stops being guesswork.
There is a maintenance benefit too. A backyard course is 10 feet from your bench. When something breaks, you walk inside, fix it, and keep driving. That loop is where most of my early learning about how the truck actually works came from.
Start With What’s Already Outside
Before spending anything, walk your property and look for what you already have:
- Irregular rocks. Landscape rock, creek stone, chunks of broken concrete. The uglier the shape, the better it works.
- Roots and tree bases. Exposed roots are excellent natural obstacles and already have the height variation you want.
- Scrap wood. Fence pickets, offcuts, an old shelf board. These become ramps and off-camber platforms.
- Firewood. Split logs are ideal straddle obstacles and they are already stacked somewhere.
- A slope. Any grade change in the yard, even a shallow one, gives you climbs and descents for free.
Most people have enough material for a decent course sitting in their yard already. I bought exactly one bag of landscape rock, and only because I wanted more mid-size pieces.
Size the Course to Your Truck
This is where most home courses go wrong. People see photos of 1/10 scale rigs on big rock and build something the same size, then wonder why their SCX24 cannot clear anything.
Use your tire diameter as the measuring unit:

Roughly, an obstacle at one tire diameter is a real climb, and one and a half tire diameters is at the edge of what a stock micro crawler will do. Past that you are not practicing, you are just flipping the truck and walking over to flip it back.
The SCX24 and TRX4M are close enough in size that the same course works for both. If you run an SCX10 alongside a micro, build the course for the micro and the bigger truck will simply have an easy day.
The Four Obstacles Worth Building
You do not need a sprawling course. Four well-chosen obstacles cover almost everything:
1. A rock pile with three lines. The core piece. Build it so there is an easy path, a medium path, and one that only works if you get your wheel placement exactly right. This is the obstacle you will run hundreds of times.
2. A tilting board. One board propped on a rock, adjustable by moving the rock. Off-camber terrain is what tips micro crawlers, especially the SCX24, and a board lets you increase the angle a few degrees at a time instead of discovering your limit by accident on a trail.
3. A narrow channel. Two rows of rock, about one and a half truck widths apart. Forces precision. Nothing else on the course punishes lazy steering this clearly.
4. A straddle obstacle. A split log or a shaped rock too tall to roll over cleanly but low enough to pass between the tires. This is how you learn to stop high-centering.
Run all four from different entry directions. The same course driven backward is close to a new course, which is why rebuilding constantly is not necessary.
Garage and Indoor Options
If you have no usable outdoor space, indoors works better than it sounds. Carpet gives micro crawler tires real grip, and hardback books stacked at varying heights make an adjustable obstacle set that costs nothing.
On a concrete garage floor the problem is traction, since bare concrete is slick and dusty. A rubber stall mat as a base fixes that and keeps rock from scratching the floor. One mat is enough for a micro course.
The honest limitation indoors is off-camber. It is hard to build a convincing side slope on a flat floor without a tilted board, so bring the board inside too.
What Did Not Help
Two things I spent money on that I would skip:
A pre-made obstacle kit. The molded ramps and bridges sold for micro crawlers are fine products, but every surface is uniform and every angle is repeatable. Real rock is irregular, and learning to read irregular surfaces is the entire skill. A $40 kit taught me less than a $6 bag of landscape rock.
Scale scenery. Bridges, barrels, and small props look excellent in photos. They contribute nothing to driving. Buy them if you enjoy the scale side of the hobby, which is a legitimate reason, but do not confuse them with practice equipment.
Keep It Rebuildable
The one piece of gear genuinely worth buying is a large plastic storage tote. Loose rock and boards scattered across the yard become yard work, and yard work is how courses get dismantled and never rebuilt. Everything goes in the tote, the tote lives in the garage, and setup takes three minutes.
If you drive after work in winter, a clamp-on work light extends your season considerably. Crawling in the dark with one hard light source is also good practice, since it makes reading terrain harder in a useful way.
What to Buy
Total spend for a functional course, if you buy anything at all:
- Landscape rock: one or two bags from a local garden center, around $5 each. Buy locally; shipping rock is not worth it.
- Boards: cedar fence pickets, a few dollars each at any hardware store. Cut to about 18 inches for micro crawlers.
- Storage tote: the difference between a course that lasts and one that gets cleaned up.
- Rubber stall mat: only if you are running on concrete or bare grass.
- Clamp work light: only if you want to drive after dark.
You can build something worth driving for under $20. Most of what makes it good is free and already in your yard.
One thing worth knowing before you start driving it: home courses are hard on tires and pack grit into the drivetrain faster than trail runs do, because you are running the same abrasive rock over and over. Cleaning your crawler after a run becomes a habit quickly.
